Dubrovnik Tourism capital for the week-end!

About Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik – a thousand years and more of history interweave with myriad ways to discover its beauty. There are many beautiful cities in the world; however, the people of Dubrovnik claim their city to be the most beautiful.

Dubrovnik is a city of a unique political and cultural history, of world-famous cultural heritage and beauty (inscribed on the List of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO) – it is one of the most attractive and famous cities in the Mediterranean.

According to records, the area around Dubrovnik was first inhabited somewhere between 6000 and 2000 BC. The existence of the city was lost in the cloudy course of history, with legend and historical facts being meshed together. What is certain is that Dubrovnik is an ancient city, persevering on its stony cliffs for at least 14 centuries.

Between the 14th century and 1808, Dubrovnik ruled itself as a free state - Ragusa, although it was a vassal from 1382 to 1804 of the Ottoman Empire and paid an annual tribute to its sultan.

The prosperity of the city was historically based on maritime trade. It achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries, as it became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy. That time was also characterized by the rivalry with the Republic of Venice and other Italian maritime republics.

The beginning of modern tourism is associated with the construction of the Hotel Imperial in Dubrovnik in 1897. Today, Dubrovnik is among the 10 best preserved medieval walled cities in the world and Croatia's most famous tourist destinations.
